Playwright + Cloudflare: A Diagnostic Checklist for When the Proxy Isn't the Problem
Every week in QA engineering and web-automation forums, the same question surfaces: a team running synthetic checkout monitoring, regional ad verification, or public price research wires a proxy into Playwright, hits a Cloudflare challenge page, and immediately assumes the proxy IP is burned. They swap proxy providers, burn another gigabyte of bandwidth, and hit the exact same wall ten minutes later.
When a request fails in Playwright while succeeding in a normal browser tab over the same tunnel, the proxy is not the problem. Modern edge protection does not evaluate an IP address in isolation. It checks consistency across your network egress, TLS handshake, browser runtime environment, and request pacing.
Before replacing your proxy pool, run this 10-minute diagnostic sequence to isolate which layer is tripping the alarm.
Four layers, not one score
When Playwright connects to a Cloudflare-fronted page through a real 4G/5G mobile proxy, four independent checks run before the page finishes loading:
- Network & ASN classification: Does the Autonomous System Number (ASN) belong to a hosting provider or a genuine mobile carrier like T-Mobile (
AS21928), Verizon (AS22394), or AT&T (AS20057)? - Transport & TLS/HTTP/2 fingerprint: Do cipher suites, ALPN negotiation, and HTTP/2 SETTINGS frames match the browser version declared in
User-Agent? - Browser runtime & DOM signals: Does
navigator.webdriverreturntrue? Do WebGL strings, viewport dimensions, and Client Hints (Sec-CH-UA-Mobile,Sec-CH-UA-Platform) match the claimed OS? - Behavioral & session continuity: Did the exit IP change mid-session while keeping the same cookies, or are requests arriving at zero-jitter intervals?
When layer 1 is a clean SIM-backed carrier IP, failures almost always come from layers 2, 3, or 4.
The 10-minute diagnostic checklist
Step 1: Run a plain curl and headed-browser baseline
Verify that the exit IP itself is healthy and classified as a mobile carrier using the exact same proxy authentication syntax for curl, Python, and Playwright:
curl -x http://USER-sticky_10:PASS@us-mob.veilsocks.io:9200 https://blog.veilsocks.com/whatismyip
Check two things with our ASN & IP lookup tool and blacklist checker:
- Confirm the IP sits inside a real carrier ASN rather than a datacenter range (see what an ASN is and why it matters).
- Launch a headed stock Chrome window through that same sticky proxy and load the public target page once manually.
If manual browsing through the sticky proxy succeeds while Playwright fails on request #1, your egress IP is clean. Move to Step 2.
Step 2: Check for Playwright flag and Client Hint leaks
Three common Playwright configuration mistakes trigger immediate blocks:
- Overriding
User-Agentwithout matching Client Hints. Passing a customuser_agentstring inbrowser.new_context()(e.g., Chrome 128 on Windows) while Playwright's Chromium binary sendsSec-CH-UAheaders for Chrome 131 on Linux creates an instant version/OS contradiction. - Outdated stealth monkey-patches. Older stealth plugins overwrite
navigator.pluginsorchrome.runtimewith broken property descriptors that modern integrity checks detect. An unmodified, current Chrome channel (channel="chrome") outperforms broken DOM patches. - WebRTC host leaks. Run your Playwright page against our free proxy leak test (and review how to test if your proxy is leaking) to confirm WebRTC is not exposing your server's datacenter IP alongside your mobile proxy.
Step 3: Align timezone and locale with the mobile carrier exit
This is the most frequent configuration bug on mobile pools. A developer routes traffic through a US T-Mobile 5G proxy in Dallas (America/Chicago), but runs Playwright inside a cloud container in Frankfurt (UTC or Europe/Berlin) with en-DE locale headers.
To an edge firewall, that looks like a European Linux server spoofing a Texas phone connection. Match your context to the proxy geography:
- Set
timezone_idto the proxy's US region (America/New_York,America/Chicago,America/Los_Angeles). - Set
locale="en-US"soAccept-LanguageandIntl.DateTimeFormatagree with the US carrier exit. - For mobile web or ad verification, use Playwright device descriptors (
playwright.devices['Pixel 7']) so viewport, touch support, andSec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?1align.
Step 4: Audit session continuity and sticky timers
Mobile proxies support per-request rotation and sticky sessions (see sticky vs rotating mobile proxies). Never use per-request IP rotation inside a single Playwright BrowserContext.
Loading one web page fires 40 to 120 sub-requests for scripts, styles, and API calls. Rotating on every connection means sub-resources arrive from dozens of cell towers while carrying the same session cookies. Always bind one BrowserContext to one sticky session (sticky_10 or sticky_30). When rotating to a fresh IP, close the context, clear cookies, and open a new context with a new sticky session ID.
Step 5: Separate rate limits from fingerprint blocks
- Blocked on navigation #1: Environment, TLS, locale, or IP-class mismatch (Steps 1–3).
- Clean for 15 minutes, then 429s or challenges: Pacing ceiling. Check our benchmark on how many requests per minute a mobile proxy IP can handle — adding
random.uniform(0.4, 1.6)seconds of jitter and staying within 15–45 RPM per sticky IP prevents mid-run throttling.

Respecting legitimate site boundaries
Diagnostic hygiene prevents legitimate QA suites, ad-verification checks, and public price monitors from being falsely flagged due to container defaults like UTC timezones or per-request rotation. When testing your own staging or production apps behind Cloudflare, configure a WAF allow-rule or verified test header. When collecting public market data, always respect robots.txt, rate limits, and terms of service.
FAQ
Why does my Playwright script get blocked on a mobile proxy when curl works? curl makes a single stateless request without running JavaScript, whereas Playwright exposes a full browser runtime. Mismatched Sec-CH-UA headers, WebRTC host leaks, or a UTC container timezone contradicting a US proxy exit will block the browser context even when the mobile IP is clean.
Should I use rotating or sticky mobile proxies with Playwright? Always use sticky sessions (sticky_10 or sticky_30). A single page load makes dozens of sub-requests; rotating per request sends sub-resources and cookies from different IPs, invalidating the session.
Does matching the Playwright timezone to the proxy city matter? Yes. Edge scripts compare IP geo-location against Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone. A cloud container set to UTC exiting through a Texas mobile carrier is a common automation flag.
Why do stealth plugins sometimes make blocks worse? Outdated stealth plugins modify navigator.plugins and WebGL getters in ways that leave detectable prototype artifacts. A stock Chrome channel with aligned locale, timezone, and a sticky 4G/5G carrier IP is far cleaner.
